Dr. Biswarup Purkayastha is an exceptionally proficient cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, possessing extensive knowledge in heart and lung transplantation. He has a robust clinical background, having previously worked at KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad; Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai; Medanta in Lucknow; B M Birla in Kolkata; and Narayana Hrudayalaya, where he completed his initial training. Additionally, he has undergone further international training at the Vienna General Hospital as part of the Toronto–Vienna Lung Transplant Academy Program, which has significantly enhanced his skills in advanced transplant techniques. He was awarded the two-year full-term Greenlane Fellowship in Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery and Heart Lung Transplants in Auckland, New Zealand.
The fellowship at Greenlane, Australasia’s largest cardiothoracic unit and a well-regarded training center, provided him with exposure to intricate cardiothoracic procedures, including heart-lung transplants and advanced aortic work. This experience allowed him to enhance his skills in some of the most innovative developments in cardiothoracic surgery. His training encompassed practical experience with heart-lung transplants, along with pioneering heart and lung procurement techniques utilizing advanced machine preservation systems such as XViVO, Paragonix, and Transmedics OCS.
He deepened his interest in lung transplants by attending the international Toronto-Vienna lung transplant academy. Additionally, he received industry-based training on ventricular assist devices (VADs) such as Heart Mate 3 and HeartWare, participating in numerous LVAD and BiVAD implantations, as well as bridge-to-transplant procedures. Furthermore, he acquired significant experience in ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) and mechanical circulatory support systems, achieving ELSO 101 certification and subsequently the ELSO Level 1 ECMO certification, gaining invaluable experience and exposure while working in various ELSO accredited ECMO ICUs.
Dr. Biswarup’s fellowship also introduced him to complex aortic surgeries, which are particularly significant for the Pacific population due to their unique susceptibility to aortic pathologies. His tenure in Auckland involved managing, assisting, and performing under supervision a range of aortic conditions, including aneurysms, dissections, and extensive aortic repairs using both conventional and hybrid techniques. This encompassed procedures such as hemi-arch, total arch, valve-sparing roots, and Frozen Elephant Trunks (FET) combined with TEVAR.
Upon his return to India, Dr. Biswarup joined the esteemed Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai, where he dedicated over a year to lead their lung transplant program. He now continues to apply his expertise and passion for cardiac surgery and transplants at the Kamalnayan Bajaj Hospital in Aurangabad, located in the heart of Marathwada.
